Background
PhD in Molecular Biology (UAM-2004), Marta Gómez de Cedrón (Orcid ID: 0000-0002-0894-970X) has developed her scientific career in the field of metabolism, nutrition, and non-communicable chronic diseases, cancer and ageing. In 2013, she joined to IMDEA Food Institute to apply molecular nutrition to improve the human health in non-communicable chronic diseases, ageing, and treatment responses in cancer. She is responsible of the Unit of Metabolic Reprogramming focusing her research on the analysis of cellular metabolism and metabolites involved in pathophysiological processes, with a special interest on Metainflammation and Immunologic Plasticity as Therapeutic Targets.
She has published more than 50 peer-review papers in the area of metabolism and nutrition, with relevant scientific contributions: role of miR203 in cancer EMBO J. 2020; Cancer Cell. 2016), and clinical trial in cancer patients with Lipchronic® to improve immune system (WO/2017/187000) (Front Immunol. 2025 doi: 10.3389/fimmu.2025.1519978). She participates in various undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs (UAM): Master in Food Systems: Functional Foods”(EIT-EU) “Master of Physical Exercise and Cancer Patient”.
Research
Our main research interests are the study of cellular metabolism in pathophysiologic scenarios to provide biomarkers and therapeutic targets in non-communicable chronic diseases, cancer and aging. From basic research to preclinical and clinical trials, we develop personalised nutritional interventions to target metainflammation and to augment immune system plasticity. We also investigate the effect of bioactive natural compounds, and diet derived ingredients to restore the metabolic homeostasis in chronic diseases, aging and cancer.
Finally, in collaboration with the platform Genyal (clinical trials in health) we conduct clinical trials to validate the effects of nutritional interventions. We integrate data from omics technologies (genomic, transcriptomic, epigenomic (methylome), metagenomic), together with the characterization of the nutritional and metabolic status of individuals (anthropometry, biochemistry, and immune phenotyping), and lifestyle factors to apply precision nutrition to improve the individuals´ quality of life and the promotion of health.
